On Tuesday 18th September 2018 , Cllr John Beesley called for a united front to resist the off-shore oil rig plans in an open letter in the Bournmouth Echo.
Corallion’s plans can only realistically become a commercial reality if Perenco agrees to follow up with onshore to offshore long reach drilling. Perenco has it in their give to remove this threat now by stating that they will not get involved with the Colter oil field.
It is ten months since Fossil Free Dorset found out about the offshore rig plans. Bournemouth Council had responded to plans but made no public statement. Campaigners quickly met and wrote to MPs and Greg Clarke (Secretary of State for BEIS), calling for protection from offshore drilling. This action had massive support, with the local chamber of commerce, Lush, Virgin Start-up, several NGOs, Chris Packham and Dame Jane Goodall all co-signing the letter. The decision regarding the offshore rig is due at any time, whilst it is good to see the Council finally make a public statement on the issue, the call to arms couldn’t have been left any later.

Having rallied a team to block a planned well in Swanage two years ago and working hard to protect Dorset from the fossil fuel industry’s most severe threats, we hope Cllr Beesley is serious about a team effort to stop the off-shore rig and that he will engage with those that have been working this issue consistently……. preferably before a decision is taken. We await an email……….
